Wedding Vows

Wedding vows are one of the most important parts of the wedding ceremony. The vows are a verbal promise of the couple ’s intentions in the marriage and may dictate the future course of the marriage if both parties stick to what they have promised the other. Some individuals choose to say the traditional words dictated in the marriage ceremony by the official conducting the ceremony. Other individuals choose to write and say their own vows as an expression of love towards one another. Writing your own vows can be difficult, but will be much more meaningful than simply repeating the words that someone else told you to say.

If choosing to write your own wedding vows, there are several things to keep in mind. The first is that writing your own vows is intended to show your love for the individual that you are saying the words to. The marriage vows should simply state your intentions for the marriages and the promises you will make to the other to ensure that the marriage will work. You should be comfortable with the words you are saying and mean everything that you say. Personal marriage vows should be tailored to the individual’s situation and how they feel about marriage and each other. When writing the vows, say them out load to yourself. If you feel uneasy making a statement or are unhappy with the way that something sounds, leave it out of the vows or revise it.

It is also important to remember that the tone of the wedding vows should match the tone of the rest of the wedding. If the rest of the ceremony is solemn and formal, then the recitation of the vows should be formal as well. If the tone of the wedding is more casual, then there is a little more leeway in what should be contained in the marriage vows and how the vows should be recited. By matching the personal wedding promises to the tone of the rest of the wedding, the participants are ensuring a smooth transition for the ceremony and will not seem awkward while trying to recite their vows.

Some individuals that are having a casual wedding decide to inject a small amount of humor into the wedding ceremony by reciting funny wedding vows. These vows can include anything from promising to make pancakes on Sunday morning to not asking for chores to be done while a favorite team is playing. There are many ways that an individual can lighten up the tone of the wedding by including marriage vows that are not standard, but to achieve the effect wanted, there are several things to keep in mind. Individuals should refrain from using sexual humor or inside jokes for the wedding promises as it may make the other party and members of the audience embarrassed or confused. Also, individuals should discuss using humorous vows prior to the ceremony and read what the other is intending to say before the words are spoken to ensure that there are no hurt feelings or unpleasant surprises that may ruin what is supposed to be a very special day.

Weddings are enhanced by memorable wedding vows.
