Wedding Speech

The wedding speech is a tradition a many weddings. If you’ve been asked to give a speech at a wedding and need some ideas, here are some that may help you come up with just the right word. As you will see some used humor, while others wax more lyrical and poetic.

  • One this lovely day I would like to thank my Father-in-law for giving me three mother-in-laws! Between the 3 they all have raised a beautiful young woman! I now catch her in my arms but I here that down the road I will catch her in my wallet!
  • Out of everyone in this room I have a unique perspective on J and F's relationship. I was there through five years of the good and bad times. I was there when they first locked eyes while passing a football at church camp and I was also there when J threatened to kick him out of our apartment. But most of what I witnessed was somewhere in between the ups and the downs, which is where I think a person can truly get an understanding of the love between two people. Love doesn't just come out during celebrations or when making up after an argument, true love is there daily and shines through when you least expect it. To quote John Lennon, Love is living, living love...and it's that everyday love that keeps marriages alive and thriving. So to J and F, remember to live your love to the fullest and I know you will have many years of happiness.

In another wedding speech the speaker messed up his facts resulting in his own mortification. The last example of a wedding speech is told as part of a story leading up to the best man’s choice of what to say for his wedding speech.

  • Our best man stood and praised us for several moments. At the end of the speech, he announced that he hoped Jim and Wendy would have a long and happy life together. The only difficulty with his speech was that Wendy was the name of my husband's ex-wife. They had divorced several months before after a difficult separation. We took it in stride and went on. Bob was terribly upset about it.
  • This past summer, two friends of ours got married. The bride was my wife’s best friend and the groom was one of my best friends. They had known each other for almost two years before they decided to even go out. When Berta first met Mike her question to my wife was “do you think that he likes ‘ritas’?” referring to Senoritas. My wife’s response was “why don’t you find out.” Of course Mike was also asking questions about this time, “Do you think that she would go out with me?” My response was like my wife’s, “ask and find out.” Neither one of us would give them a definitive answer.

Well she finally asked him out. Things were very slow in their romance in the beginning, and my wife and I were constantly being asked what the other liked. My favorite response was simply just “ask him” or “ask her”. They finally decided to get married and my wife was asked to be the Maid of Honor and of course I was asked to be the Best Man. My comment when he first asked me to be the best man was what do you think? I responded that the two of you deserve each other; this was said in a very positive way (which kind of scared Mike and I had to explain). I explained that good people deserve good people.

I was reminded that I needed to give a wedding toast. I kept thinking about how to give the speech, and then it dawned on me. When the time came for the big toast, I choose to keep it short and sweet. I started out by addressing the crowd and then Mike and finally Berta.

The speech went something like this, “Ladies and Gentlemen, I would like to propose a toast to two very good friends who really deserve each other.” I then went on to say, “Mike I think she likes you and yes Berta I think he likes ‘ritas’”.

Apparently they had asked others in the crowd very similar questions because over half of the crowd started laughing hysterically and the rest just looked confused. Of course Mike just hung his head down and laughed, while Berta turned a lovely shade of blush rose. I think my wedding speech went pretty well.

The event of giving a wedding speech is a moment in time that allows the speech giver to share a few thoughts about the couple. The speech should not contain questionable language, adult themes or humiliating stories. Instead the wedding speech should leave a feeling of humor and goodwill.
