With the release of the movie about wedding crashers more and more people became aware of the phenomenon of strangers attending wedding receptions. As you will see in the following stories, sometimes these strangers have crashed the wedding reception as a means of getting a free food and drinks.
At other times those that were first considered to be wedding crashers were actually long-forgotten friends. In another story the couple were unintentional wedding crashers when then entered a restaurant that was open to the public.
Here are a few stories about wedding crashers.
- My husband and I went to the local bar & grill for dinner. You need to pass through the bar area to get to the tables. We immediately noticed everyone was wearing dresses and suits which was highly unusually since this bar was a bit of a dive. Then we saw the bride. I told her that her dress was beautiful as we walked to our table. I thought every one had just gathered there after the formal reception but it turns the bar & grill party was the reception. There were only one or two other couples eating in the dinning room that were not with the wedding party. After my husband and I paid our check a very drunk groomsman walked up to our table. He shook our hands and thanked us for coming to the wedding. He asked if we liked our dinner. Then he said how sad it was that Grandpa couldn’t have been alive to see the wedding. He was so sincere and drunk we didn’t have the heart to tell him we had no clue who he was. We played along and shook hands with a few other groomsmen on the way out.
- It was 30 years ago that we were married and yes we had wedding crashers at our reception. We didn't realize it until days later when I asked my newly married husband who the couple was that came to the reception. He thought they were from my side of the family and I thought they were from his side of the family. Nothing crazy happened; I think they just came for the food.
- My parents’ wedding was crashed by two old friends who we had forgotten about since elementary school. I was out of college and saw these two young men drinking and laughing with some women, and I walked over to throw them out because I didn't recognize them. I grabbed their shoulders and they turned around, only to shout, "JAKE!” I then recognized them and told them what I had thought. We all had a great laugh.
Unfortunately not all wedding crashers are harmless. Recently there was a news story about a woman and her daughter who crashed weddings for the sole purpose of theft. They kept to themselves, avoiding interaction with the other guests, then when no one was looking they made off with a handful of gift cards.
Anyone planning a wedding would be advised to have someone in charge of watching over the gift table and being on the look out for wedding crashers.
