If you want to give you Valentine chocolate this year, you will find a wide variety of chocolate gifts. There is just something special about the chocolate gifts that are given at Valentine’s Day. But why is chocolate associated so firmly with romance and love? Well, that may go clear back to the Aztecs. Cocoa was the favorite drink of the Aztecs who believe that chocolate imbued the consumer with increased energy, divine wisdom and sexual prowess. This belief is probably why cocoa was the favorite drink served at weddings. Even Montezuma, the emperor would drink vast quantities of cocoa on a daily basis, and even more before visiting his harem. The Aztec introduced chocolate to the Spanish explorer Cortes who in turn told his King, Carlos I about the “divine drink” which gave such energy that after drinking it a man could “walk for a whole day without food.” Scientifically there might actually be something to all the hype about this substance that has made Valentine chocolate a staple. Chocolate contains several substances which have a definite influence on a person’s mood and energy. Theobromine and caffeine work as stimulants, while the endorphin phenylethylamine is a known mood elevating amino acid naturally produced by the body and been linked to “falling in love”. Another substance contained in chocolate is serotonin known to be calming.
While many believe that women like chocolate more than men, I know a few men who would dispute that. A survey by Debra Waterhouse for her book Why Women Need Chocolate found that 68% of women’s cravings are for chocolate. She also found that half of women admitted that chocolate would win out over sex every time and 22% of women used chocolate as a mood elevator. While the fat and sugar content of chocolate might deter a few people from indulging in chocolate, this dark treat’s ability to elevate the mood, relieve stress and turn up the energy level will make it a continued treat and indulgence. In fact, according to a report recently on CBS This Morning, chocolate is one of the consumables, along with liquor and cigarettes that will continue to be sold or even increase in sales in a bad economy.
Valentines chocolate presented in a heart-shaped box, wrapped in satin ribbons and lace, is a sure way to win any heart. There’s just nothing like the crackle of the wrapping, lifting off the lid of a Valentines chocolate gift to that rich sensual fragrance and that first melting sweet bite. So remember even if you can’t afford those dozen roses this Valentine’s Day, even the smallest box of Valentines chocolates will fit any budget and is a sure guarantee of a sweet kiss.
