Uncommon Baby Names

It seems lately that uncommon baby names, especially among celebrities, have become the norm. Is this because the parents feel that because they are “special” that they are required to attach a name to their child that the common (read “normal”) folks would never consider. After all, non-celebrities realize that their children will attend public school and an unusual (read “strange”) name would automatically make their child the butt of schoolyard jokes and teasing.

Years ago I remember hearing that the inventor of the Learjet, William Lear had named one of his daughters, Shanda, which makes her Shanda Lear (chandelier). More recently, Rob Morrow named his child “Tu”. Can you imagine being called Tu Morrow, and how tired he will get of hearing the famous “Orphan Annie” song, “Tomorrow, tomorrow, I love ya, Tu Morrow”?

Remember, that unusual baby name you choose will follow your child throughout his or her life. Most parents research baby names, looking for the meaning behind the name, hoping that their child will grow up to have some of the characteristics implied by the name. Fortunately for those children, the names that have the most gracious and noble meanings, are also the least likely to result in teasing and jokes.

Wanting your child to have a unique or unusual name is fine, just balance that against the possibility that your child may wish he’d been “James” instead of something from the ingredients list on the back of a cereal box. Uncommon baby names are fine, but childhood is difficult enough without sticking your baby with a name that even you may come to regret at some point.
