The top 10 baby names for 2006 revealed some significant changes. One of the most surprising changes was the top boy’s name in Britain. By 2007, “Jack” was replaced by some version of “Mohammed”; to some an alarming indication of the growing Islamic presence in the UK. According to one list “Sophia” became the number one girl’s name in 2007, replacing “Emma”. However, according to the Social Security Administration, “Emily” was the top girl’s name in 2006, followed closely by “Emma”.
While one list gives “Aiden” as the top boy’s for the last two years, according to the Social Security Administration “Jacob” was the winner in 2006. On the same list, “Aiden” holds the number 30 spot. What this shows is that a limited survey of baby’s names will show a much different result from that of the Social Security Administration which records the names given to every baby in the nation. For the sake of the accuracy, the top 10 baby names list below will contain the information gleaned from the broadest number of records. The top 10 Baby Names for 2006
One interesting note is that the more traditional names are still in the top 10 for baby names in 2006. Names that have been in evidence for hundreds of years are still being given to babies; which may speak to the importance of the tried and true, as parents choose names that have belonged to historically successful and memorable greats.
