There are a lot of misconceptions about teen pregnancy that are billed as common knowledge, most of it deemed true by teenagers. Only by knowing the true teen pregnancy facts does the nation have any hope of reducing the number of teen pregnancies in the country.

One of the facts that many individuals may not be aware of is the number of teen pregnancies that occur in the nation annually. It is estimated that nearly 750,000 teenage girls become pregnant every year. This number has gradually been reduced over the last few years.

Experts are of two minds as to why this occurs. Some experts believe that the number of teen pregnancies have been reduced because a higher number of teenagers are practicing abstinence and waiting until they are married to have sexual intercourse. Other experts believe that the downward trend in teen pregnancy is due to better education about safe sex and easier access to pregnancy prevention items and birth control. The trend of whether the pregnancy rate among teens is increasing or decreasing is one of the most important things to know.

Another one of the important teen pregnancy facts that many individuals may not know is that many of the teens that have sex before the age of 16 has been an unwilling partner in the event. It is very important that these young girls have the strength and the emotional security to be able to say no to sex and resist the advances of individuals that may be taking advantage of them.

Many of the youngest pregnant teens are impregnated by someone older than them and older boys may be targeting younger females because of their unwillingness to say no to an older boyfriend. Only 1.5% of teenage mothers complete a college degree and only 1/3 receive a high school diploma. Reversing the trend of teen pregnancy in this country must start with an understanding of the teen pregnancy facts. Only then can a change be made in the trend.
