St Patricks Day Trivia

There are some traditional St Patricks Day recipes often served on the day set aside to celebrate the patron saint of Ireland. These recipes tend to fall into two categories; a recipe that has an Irish origin, or foods that are green. In fact, green-colored food has reached the point that everything from eggs, potatoes and even beer are being tinted with food coloring to achieve that lucky shade of green.

Some of the St Patricks Day recipes most often eaten on March 17th will include at least a few of the following ingredients:

  • Corned Beef
  • Cabbage
  • Potatoes
  • Lamb
  • Fish
  • Bacon

These traditional ingredients will be used to create meals that often have delightfully creative names, such as:

  • Bubble and Squeak – potatoes, cabbage and bacon
  • Cod Cobbler – fish
  • Dublin Coddle – bacon, potatoes
  • Boxty – potatoes
  • Colcannon – potatoes and cabbage

Perhaps the most popular St Patricks Day recipe is some form of corned beef and cabbage. Even this recipe has variations, such as:

  • Corned Beef & Cabbage and Horseradish Sauce
  • Corned Beef glazed with Dijon
  • Corned Beef drowned in stout
  • Corned Beef and Guinness

Then there are the St Patricks Day recipes for those who appreciate an alcoholic beverage. Of course, there’s Guinness and plain Irish whiskey. But one can also celebrate the day with a Bailey’s Irish Cream or an Irish coffee, both of which are created using a “touch of the Irish”…whiskey that is.

You don’t have to be Irish to serve your family a delightful meal featuring any variation of your favorite St Patricks Day recipes. In fact, any of these recipes will be even more delicious when served at a table decorated with green shamrocks and other symbols of the day.
