All-important, of course, is the food! A traditional Irish meal is potatoes and stew, but that's not very festive. Instead of mashed potatoes, indulge your guests with beer batter fries or Hasselback potatoes.

Roast a rabbit or leg of lamb on a spit and eat outside. Irish soda bread, beef and Guinness pie, and bacon and egg pie are all traditional, hearty Irish dishes. Otherwise, you could go by color and serve your guests food in orange and green—green-dyed popcorn is a recent American innovation.

St Patricks Day drinks are easy to arrange—lager colored with green food coloring, whiskey, or any kind of liquor (in quantity!) will satisfy your guests’ thirst nicely. For guests who don't indulge, provide a lime-flavored punch or green lemonade.

Although Irish cuisine is not famous for its desserts, St Patricks Day desserts can still be festive and appropriate. Pipe green shamrocks on cupcakes, fill a Pavlova or Swiss roll with tinted cream, or serve meringue 'potatoes'.

Other St Patricks Day party ideas and in keeping with the tradition of leprechauns and luck would be to scatter gold chocolate coins around the dessert table. The look will be festive and perfect for your party.

Of course, the most important St Patrick's Day party idea is dressing up. Some of your guests might be content with a modest shamrock in a buttonhole, while more vigorous or patriotic partiers will spray-paint their hair and body green.
