St Patricks Day Events

In my hometown thirty minutes north of Atlanta, GA, St Patricks Day events consist of nothing more than wearing green to school simply to avoid the pinches one receives if not. Four hours away in Savannah, GA, celebrations in honor of the saint are part of the town's rich culture and history.

The Savannah St Patricks Day parade unofficially boasts the largest attendance and is a rich, brightly colored commemoration of the day the Saint is said to have died. Unlike other celebrations around the nation, the Savannah parade occurs on the actual date of the feast in honor of Saint Patrick, despite being a weekday.

While the town of Savannah has opted for dyeing their fountains, up north Chicagoans gather annually to celebrate the feast day and watch the Chicago River be dyed a brilliant shade of emerald green. Oddly enough, despite being one of the more favored St Patricks Day ideas, the association between the color green and St. Patrick is, for the most part, an American-made affiliation!

Even so, almost anywhere one looks, St Patricks Day is a day of celebration and festivities for anyone and everyone, Irish or not. From Seattle to Chicago to Savannah, the week of March the 17th is one filled with green food, green rivers, green parades, and people coming together to celebrate the day of Saint Patrick's passing.

While the United States has certainly added its own twist to the traditional Irish national holiday, there is surely no shortage of feasting in either country. Neither is there a shortage of St Patricks Day events to celebrate the day.

So this St. Patrick's Day, dress in green, eat an American meal of corned beef and cabbage, and attend a parade in honor of the saint; when the day is done, Irish or not, there'll be a round of Guinness and hundreds of people simply enjoying their St Patricks Day events.
