Single Parenting Tip

Each single parenting tip below was provided by a parent who has experience in a single parenting situation. Sometimes the best down-to-earth advice doesn’t come out of a professional think tank by someone with a bunch of letters behind their name, but from one who has been in the trenches and survived.

The basic theme of these single parenting tips is the importance of being there for your kids and remembering to take time for yourself. These parents found a way to maintain a good balance and perhaps their advice will help you.

  1. I myself am a single mom and my daughter is going to college. I think a good tip is to make time for your children. It might be hard to hold a job and raise children, but don't be absent in their lives. Make sure you are a presence and that you are there for them.
  2. Don't sweat the housework. Kids don't care if the house is sloppy as long as you have time to spend with them.
  3. Always put the kids to bed at 8PM, when they are under 10 years old. I raised two kids alone from the time they were 2 and 5. Putting them to bed at this time gave me an hour to clean house and then an hour or two of me time. Every single parent needs me time. Early bed time also resulted in high achievement in school and fewer discipline problems as they were well rested.
  4. I was a single parent for the first 5-years of my son’s life. I've found that it's OK to ask for help from friends and family. You can't do it all. Set some time aside for yourself. Remember that you must not only take care of your child but also of your child’s parent (you).
  5. Letting my child know that no matter who I date, my child is my first priority. My child is very secure.

These single parents have each shared a single parenting tip that has helped them raise secure, well-adjusted children. Perhaps you will find a nugget of wisdom here that will help you be the best parent your child could hope for.
