Preteen Pregnancy

The issue of preteen pregnancy is an important one for the nation. Curbing the early teen pregnancy rate is an issue that many communities in the United States have undertaken to ensure that young girls are not deprived of their education and the number of children living in poverty because they were born to preteen mothers is reduced. Pregnant teens are more likely to drop out of school, destroying their chances of continuing their education and eliminating any hope of obtaining a good job to support themselves and their families. The newborn child often ends up raised by the preteen’s parents or grandparents, if not given up for adoption as soon as it is born, adding more infants to the already overcrowded child services industry.

In recent years, the number of preteen pregnancies reported has declined by a substantial rate, almost by half. Experts are of two minds about why this has occurred. Some experts believe that the preteen pregnancy numbers have declined because of better education about the consequences of sex before marriage and the availability of information about safe sex practices. Other experts believe that abstinence only programs have contributed to the drop in the early teen pregnancy rate because less young females are having sexual intercourse. What ever the reason for the decline in numbers, the trend is one that many communities would be happy to help continue.

One thing that all experts agree on is that the preteen pregnancy rate can only be curbed by educating the children about the dangers of sexual activity and how to keep themselves safe. Children between the ages of 10 and 12 are old enough to understand the relationship between cause and effect and it is important that they receive the right information about pregnancy in a controlled environment rather than depend on the fables of their friends for proper information about sex. If the children have the right information up front, they will be more likely to make the right decisions when the time comes.

It is also important that parents talk to their children about pregnancy and how to avoid it. Although teachers and counselors may have more experience with talking to children about difficult issues, there is no one that the child will trust more than their parents. The parent will need to impart the family’s values and position on sexual activity to the child and be able and willing to answer any questions that the child may have about sex and sexual activity. Although this may be difficult and uncomfortable for the parent, it is much better than dealing with a preteen pregnancy.
