Pregnancy ultrasounds provide the opportunity for soon-to-be parents that would like to see their baby before it is born. The majority of pregnant females and their mates see their child by ultrasound many months before the child is due to be born. There are many reasons why pregnancy ultrasounds may be conducted. Some of the reasons are medically beneficial, while others are solely for the peace of mind for the soon to be parents. For whatever reason the pregnancy ultrasounds are conducted, they are sure to provide valuable information for the parents and the medical professional about the development of the baby.

One of the main reasons that pregnancy ultrasounds are used is to determine the length of time the baby has been developing. Because many women are unsure of the exact date of conception, pregnancy ultrasounds are used to measure the baby, which is then used to determine the stage of development that the baby has reached. Although this is not an exact science, pregnancy ultrasounds can help the medical professional obtain a reasonable estimate as to the date of conception, the age of the fetus, and the projected due date for the baby to be born. Based on subsequent pregnancy ultrasounds, the initial estimates and due date may be revised to reflect new information. It is not uncommon for women to have their due dates lengthened or shortened because of information obtained by the pregnancy ultrasounds.

Another reason why pregnancy ultrasounds are so popular is because the parents can use the information obtained by the ultrasound to determine whether they will be having a boy or a girl. Using information from the ultrasound to determine the sex of the unborn baby has become more popular in recent years as more families create gender specific nurseries for their children. There are still some individuals that would like to be surprised by the gender of the baby at birth, and for these individuals, resisting the urge to get a definitive answer about the gender of the baby during the routine pregnancy ultrasounds can be difficult. The gender of the child can usually be determined after the fetus has grown for at least three months with the designation becoming easier as the fetus continues to develop.

Using pregnancy ultrasounds to view the development of the child and the health of the woman’s reproductive organs is also medically necessary. Pregnancy ultrasounds can reveal if the baby is positioned in the womb improperly or if the baby is not developing as it should, prompting early medical intervention that may save the life of the child and its mother. Pregnancy ultrasounds can also detect the presence of twins or triplets in the womb, something that may be necessary for the potential parents to know before the birth occurs so that they can prepare. There are many medical reasons for pregnancy ultrasounds to be performed and each reason is beneficial for the fetus, the parents, and the medical professional charged will keeping them healthy.
