Pregnancy Size By Week

When it comes to determining the health and proper development of a fetus, a good indication is calculating the pregnancy size by week. While in the womb, a fetus grows at a regular rate and each stage of development has the fetus growing at a different rate. By calculating the pregnancy size by week, the physician and the parents can determine that the fetus is growing normally. By using this calculation, it is also possible to determine the approximate age of the fetus and potential due date of the delivery. There are many reasons that the physician may want to calculate pregnancy size by week and all are beneficial to the unborn child.

Calculating pregnancy size by week is typically accomplished with the use of an ultrasound machine. When an ultrasound is taken, a picture is created of the reproductive organs and the fetus growing inside. The physician can use this information to not only calculate pregnancy size by week but can also examine the reproductive organs for any sign of damage or abnormal growth. Using an ultrasound is one of the best, non-invasive ways for a physician to detect any problems with the pregnancy. It allows the physician to see whether the baby is developing properly and whether it is positioned within the womb properly. Early detection of any problems with the pregnancy may save the life of the mother and the child.

As the woman enters the third trimester, calculating pregnancy size by week is typically accomplished by measuring the woman’s abdomen. By taking the number of inches that the abdomen has grown since the prior measurement was taken, the physician can estimate the growth of the child inside. Taking an ultrasound at this point in the pregnancy will not show a great deal of information because the baby inside is so large that it will take up all of the room in the picture.

The physician may also attempt to calculate pregnancy size by week by actually feeling the position of the uterus and the position of the baby within the womb. This technique is very important as it can alert the physician to the possible due date of the baby and how quickly it may occur. It is not uncommon for women to have their due dates changes within the last month of pregnancy. Based on the information obtained by the physician, the due date may be bumped up or pushed back by several days or weeks. Calculating pregnancy size by week is not an exact science and the information is used to give an estimate, not a solid result. It is important to keep that in mind when calculating pregnancy size by week.
