Pregnancy Cramps

One of the scariest moments for a mother-to-be is when she begins to experience pregnancy cramps. Although this can be alarming, in the majority of cases, pregnancy cramps are benign and are a normal part of the pregnancy process. All women experience cramps at some point in their pregnancy as a natural reaction to the hormonal changes that are occurring within their body. These cramps are commonly experienced within the first trimester of pregnancy, when the majority of bodily changes occur, and just prior to the birth of the baby, when the body is preparing for childbirth.

Cramps that occur during the first trimester are typically signs that the body is adjusting to accommodate the growth of the baby inside. Women must undergo a number of bodily changes before the birth of the child and many of these changes can prove to be uncomfortable while they are occurring. One of the most common sources of pregnancy cramps is the expansion of the womb to provide room for the fetus to grow. As the womb expands, the woman will begin to experience cramps similar to menstrual cramps. Although these cramps may be painful, they are a normal part of the pregnancy process and will not harm the woman or the unborn child.

Any cramps that occur within the first trimester that are extremely painful or accompanied by bleeding may be a sign of an impending miscarriage. If the pregnancy cramps are occurring in the lower abdomen or bleeding is occurring, the woman should seek medical attention immediately. Though miscarriages are common in the United States, it does not make the process any less devastating to the woman experiencing the situation. After a miscarriage, the woman will need medical attention and emotional support to help her through this difficult time.

Cramping during the third, or last, trimester are signaling that the body is preparing for the birth of the baby. Also known as false labor cramps, pregnancy cramps in the third trimester is caused by the cervix beginning to dilate to allow the baby to be passed through during birth. The cervix must dilate around 10 centimeters to allow the head of the baby to pass through and the hormones that cause this dilation begin to flood the body about a month before the baby is due to be born. As these hormones travel through the body, the cervix is affected and begins to stretch in anticipation. These cramps can be painful but they typically only last for a short period of time. As the last trimester continues, these pregnancy cramps will get closer and closer together, finally culminating in the labor, delivery, and birth of the baby.
