Pregnancy After Tubal Ligation

Researchers have found that about 1% of women experience pregnancy after tubal ligation. This is worrisome because this can cause a large number of health complications. When a tubal ligation is performed, it is meant to be a permanent sterilization technique and getting pregnant afterwards is considered a risky endeavor. If a woman becomes pregnant after a tubal, there are a number of issues that she must keep in mind.

When it comes to pregnancy after tubal ligation, the response most often uttered is “Oh, no!” The reason why many women choose to pay for a tubal ligation and undergo the surgery is to prevent becoming pregnant again. There are many reasons that a woman may choose to undergo a tubal ligation to avoid pregnancy. One reason is that the woman may already have enough children and having another may not be economically feasible. Some women choose to undergo tubal ligation because of their age and the difficulty that comes when older women get pregnant. Whatever the reason for the surgery, a post-tubal pregnancy is usually not a welcome event.

There are many complications that can occur with pregnancy after tubal ligation. After tubal ligation, there is only a 60% chance that the pregnancy will be successful and be carried to term. The fallopian tubes are damaged during a tubal ligation, reducing the possibility of pregnancy after tubal ligation. If the woman becomes pregnant after the surgery, there is a high risk of an ectopic pregnancy, where the egg remains in the fallopian tube or ovaries after fertilization. An ectopic pregnancy can cause the rupture of the reproductive organs and severe internal bleeding requiring urgent medical attention.

If a pregnancy after tubal ligation is suspected, it is important that the woman seek medical attention right away to prevent serious medical complications. The physician will conduct an examination and discuss available options with the woman affected. Quick medical intervention may be needed to preserve the health of the woman and in rare cases, emergency surgery may be needed. When such a pregnancy occurs, quick medical attention may be the only thing that can ensure the health of the woman and prevent serious complications.
