Origins of Mothers Day |

The origins of Mothers Day are rooted in the history of Mothers Day which may be new to some of us. In the spring most pagan religions celebrated some festival for the Mother Goddess; in Greece it was Rhea, in Rome it was Cybele, and in the British Isles it was Brigid.
As Christianity took hold the celebrations changed to Mother Church and later to one's own mother. In the 1600s in England there was a celebration called Mothering Day which is still in existence today. Many people were servants and worked without much time off. The 4th Sunday of Lent was set aside to honor Mothers and the servants were given the day off to spend with their mothers. In the U.S. Julia Ward Howe (the lyricist of Battle Hymn of the Republic) organized Mothers Day meeting in Boston in 1872. But it was Anna Jarvis in 1907 who petitioned her mother's church in W. VA to celebrate the occasion of her mother's death by honoring all mother's who began our own Mothers Day. President Woodrow Wilson signed it as a holiday in 1914 making it official. As a side note in our Origins of Mother's Day, Anna Jarvis got into a bitter fight with florists over the commercialization of the holiday. She later died penniless and in a nursing home and never knew that her bills were paid by the Florist Exchange. Whatever the origins of Mothers Day, the day that is set aside to celebrate mothers should be a day of honoring our mothers. Even if mother was human and made mistakes, remember that without mothers none of us would be here. So this Mothers Day take some time to honor the woman who was a mother to you. Happy Mothers Day!
