  1. Use a theme and colors that your baby can grow into.

Instead of pale pink or blue, choose a color to paint the room that will work for a toddler or preschool aged child.

  2. Purchase furniture that serves double duty.

You can get a changing table that turns over to become a dresser. Purchase a crib that converts to a day bed. This can save you money when it is time to convert to a toddler room.

  3. For an interesting touch, consider using an old piece of furniture that you can pick up at a second hand store or a garage sale and doing a quick paint job.

Nursery Decor Ideas Example - take a nightstand and rough it up with sand paper (or quickly with an electric sander). Paint it antique white, and then paint each leg or each drawer a different color that coordinates with the room. You can give it a distressed look by roughing up the edges with fine grained sand paper after you paint.

  4. Give yourself more storage space than you think you will need. You will use it.

Nursery Decor Ideas Example - purchase an armoire that your child will use when they get older for a television. While in the nursery, the armoire can hold more than you can imagine.

  5. Have a comfortable place to sit in the nursery and possibly a place to sleep during the first few months.

You never know when you might need to sleep closely if the baby is sick or wakes up crying. Consider a solution that would suite both needs such as a lounge chair or a double wide easy chair. This can later be used for curling up with an older child to read stories. Look for a fabric that can later be used elsewhere in the home.

  6. Don't forget to have some soft lighting over the changing table.

Harsh light will upset you and the baby, and no light will make it very difficult to get the duty done.

  7. Plan carefully where to place the crib.

If possible, don't place the crib right next to a window where direct sunlight will disturb the baby or directly under a heating or cooling vent.
