You probably never thought that last minute Valentine gifts were in your future when you set off for work today. Even when you stopped in at your favorite “Grab-n-Go” for that delicious cup of drive-to-work coffee, you weren’t thinking about Valentine’s Day.

However, as you were waiting in line to pay for that coffee, you noticed the display set up next to the counter. There in blazing red, passion pink, fabulous fuchsia and sporting hearts of every size are teddy bears, unicorns, bunny rabbits and mice. There are fake roses in fake crystal vases, keychains with hearts pleading “Be Mine” and playing cards covered in roses and hearts.

Suddenly you overhear the cashier wish the person in front of you “Happy Valentine’s Day!” That’s when you realize that you are the person for whom all those tacky little last minute valentine gifts were created. You're the schlub who walked out of the house with just a quick peck on your wife’s cheek, only now realizing what the gleam in her eyes meant: “It’s Valentine’s Day and you better give me something fabulous!”

As you pay for your coffee you begin to panic. There’s no way you can get away with giving her one of those .99 cent last minute Valentines gifts at the convenience store. Are you going to spend the rest of the day trying to think of a gift to really impress her and lead her to believe that you’ve been planning this surprise all along? Pretty much.

Unfortunately you quickly find that ordering flowers to be delivered today is totally out of the question. Next you try to get reservations for tonight at the new little restaurant that she been talking about. Again, they are book solid through Easter weekend.

Now, you’re starting to really panic and quickly realize that last minute Valentine gifts can get expensive. There’s no way you can get away with just a box of chocolates that you pick up from Wally World on your way home tonight. No, that won’t work, especially when you have a sinking feeling that she already knows that you forgot all about Valentine’s Day.

Because you don’t like the dog house, you are looking at giving a really nice piece of jewelry or a trip for two to some romantic getaway. Here’s a suggestion, get on the phone to your travel agent and get that trip scheduled. Then print out the reservation confirmation, stick it in a huge, Valentine’s Day card.

Forget the chocolates. If the romantic getaway is on the beach, consider giving your wife a membership to a local tanning studio. Then give her a gift card so she can buy an entire new wardrobe for this trip. Don’t forget the gift certificate to the hair salon.

The only good thing about all these last minute Valentine gifts is that you’ll get to go along on the trip and enjoy beach and sunshine. It’s also pretty much a guarantee that you’ll not forget Valentine’s Day next year, especially when it’s a good bet that you’ll still be paying for it by then! Happy Valentine’s Day and enjoy your trip!
