Taking your newborn home from the hospital is an exciting event. Proud parents tuck their infant into their car seat for their first time in preparation for departure, but one of the most important and often overlooked items on the pre-trip checklist is installation of the car seat.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that 72.6% of infant seats are not installed correctly. How does a person become part of the 27.4% who install it correctly?
Follow these short tips and drive with confidence that your newborn will be safe.
- Follow the installation manual for the car seat step by step
- Take the car seat to a local check point, many fire stations will participate in checking, to make sure the seat is installed correctly
- Install the seat in the safest location in the vehicle, generally the rear center seat
- Rear facing seats placed in the center of the back seat are usually the safest, this position should be utilized until the infant is at least 12 months and 20 pounds
- Make sure all buckles are placed through the correct loops and latches are connected to the correct locations
- The car seat should have no lateral movement when installed properly, if there is lateral movement post installation, reinstall the car seat
- Make sure the car seat is level, most seats come with built on levelers for assistance
- If installing a forward facing seat, using a knee to put weight into the seat when trying to buckle the connecting belt
