When it comes to how pregnancy effects teens, the most important item to understand is that pregnancy takes away the teens ability to learn with her peers. When a teen becomes pregnant, more likely than not, she will drop out of school and not continue her education. Part of the reason may be because many teens are aware of the effects of teen pregnancy and may feel embarrassed and dirty around their friends and peers. This is especially pronounced when the teen enters the second trimester of pregnancy and the pregnancy begins to show in her abdomen.

Contrary to popular belief, many teens are not happy to get pregnant because that was not the intended consequence. They are embarrassed and ashamed and worst of all, in many cases the male that got her pregnant will stop speaking to her and will not claim the child as his, leaving the pregnant teen to face the consequences on her own.

Depression is one of the most common effects of teen pregnancy and must be detected and treated before the teen does something to harm herself. With teen pregnancy may come a sense of hopelessness and despair that the live that they aspired to is now over.

To understand how pregnancy affects teens, the parents and counselors must sit down with the teen in a safe, non-threatening environment and discuss their feelings and apprehensions. This is the only way to find out the teens state of mind and will detect any issues before they become full-blown emergencies.

By understanding how pregnancy effects teens, adults will have a better understanding of how to help these children cope with the issues that they are now facing. Although teen pregnancy is on the decline, there are still many teens out there facing this issue that need help. By taking the time to learn about the effects of teen pregnancy, parents and counselors will give these teens a better chance in life for them and their children.
