Bridal Shower Invitations

The history of cupid is tightly entwined with Valentine’s Day, that day of the year that we honor romantic love. One may wonder what a cubby toddler or young lad with wings and armed with a bow and arrow has to do with romance. However, a brief look at cupid’s history will quickly reveal a legend of deep and sacrificial love.

A brief look the mythologies of ancient civilizations reveals the history of Cupid (Roman), the god of love and sex, also known as “Eros” by the Greeks, as well as “Kama” (Hindu) and “Amor” (also Roman) was the son of the god Zeus and the goddess Venus. This “good” version of Cupid uses gold-tipped arrows to make his victims fall in love with the next person they look at.

Not well known is the myth that Cupid is also the son of Nyx (Night) and Erebus (Hell). This Cupid is supposed to have mated with Chaos, a union which produced both gods and men. He is known for riotous debauchery and uses lead-tipped arrows to cause “falling in hate”.

For the sake of celebrating St. Valentine’s Day, the depiction of Cupid with his heart-tipped arrows adorns cards, advertisements and decorations. This mythological icon is often shown as wearing a blindfold showing that “love is blind.”

The history of Cupid reveals that this young prankster can be blamed or thanked for romantic attachments. This mischievous chubby cherub flies around arbitrarily messing with innocent humans shooting his “love-poisoned” arrows into anyone who catches his eye. Thus he can be blamed for “love at first sight” and sudden physical attraction.
