Healthy Easter Basket |

Creating a healthy Easter basket for my kids was a challenge that I faced last year. After many Easters of buying baskets at our local retail store filled with disposable toys and laden with candy, I had had enough. Yes, it is true that like all parents I do not have a lot of free time to create some kind of incredible customized healthy Easter basket. Yes, I want my kids to open up a basket on Easter morning that they will be really excited about rather than them roll their eyes at some organic "earthy, crunchy" thing their parent got for them.
However it was time for me to put my money where my mouth was. Instead of complaining about how we are brainwashed to throw candy and plastic baskets at our kids at Easter time, I decided to do something different. I began by thinking about what truly interests each of my kids. For example, my daughter had asked for months for me to do beading and making basic bracelets with her. I found an inexpensive bracelet making kit for her. It wasn't a fancy expensive present but it was something I knew she wanted. The fact that it meant we would be spending time together made it extra special. As for the basket itself, I found a simple Easter basket at the dollar store. Instead of the horrible plastic Easter grass that our cats always seem to get sick on every year, I used simple pretty colored tissue paper that can be reused for gift wrapping. I told the kids that the Easter Bunny was into recycling and that he asked us to keep the baskets for him to leave the presents in. Even the Easter Bunny set a good example for the kids. As for the candy, I replaced it with healthy Easter treats but allowed one individually wrapped Easter peep to be included. The Easter peep is one tradition from which we could not part! Those healthy Easter baskets were a big hit. I’ll make them again next year. Hope you enjoyed our idea for a healthy Easter basket. Now, celebrate the birth of your baby with Bunny birth announcements. |
