Giving Birth at Home

If you are thinking of giving birth at home, some things really need to be considered carefully. Home birth can be a very rewarding, relaxing and loving experience. Natural child birth can also be a challenge for you and your family, so you want to be sure you are prepared.

The most important thing to ask yourself is this: do you feel safe and secure with your midwife and her level of experience? If you do not, then maybe home birth is not for you. Maybe you would be better served by finding another midwife/midwives, because it is crucial that you can depend on your midwife to handle any crisis that may arrive.

Generally, natural child birth is very safe and a very peaceful experience. Occasionally, unforeseen medical complications arise and it's best to know ahead of time what issues your midwife is able to address, what complications could possibly arise, and what the plan is for handling any complications that do arise.

If you live in a rural area, do you have quick response emergency care? If you are in a urban area, is the closest hospital a place you want to go in an emergency? Has your midwife ever attended a complicated birth? How experienced is your midwife? Can your family assist in case of emergency?

I personally know of one case where the midwife got lost even though she had been to the house several times in the weeks preceding the birth. By the time she did find her way to the home, the mother's roommates had delivered the baby. Baby and mother were fine, the roommates, however took longer to recover!

Once you are sure you have a plan in case of emergency, and you know you have the perfect midwife, enjoy the process of giving birth at home. Plan your relaxing space, your music, your snacks your distractions. Plan the party or ceremony for after the birth. Plan on inviting a few close friends to visit after you have had a little recovery time.

Bringing a new life into the world is one of the nicest things you can share with your loved ones, and giving birth at home really makes this possible.
