Funny Wedding Vows

Funny wedding vows are often the result of the modern trend of writing one’s own vows. Instead of relying on the tried and true marriage vows that have been used for millennia couples are relying on their own creativity to express their vows. Sometimes this results in wedding vows that are funny and bring a laugh.

There are few guidelines for writing your own wedding vows, although a general rule of thumb is to avoid inside jokes as this separates the audience from the wedding party. In this next story of funny wedding vows, you’ll see that they hadn’t read that particular guideline:

• I once heard that "I promise to love, honor and not poke you in the eye again." It got a huge laugh and was an inside joke that the members of the wedding party shared.

If this next isn’t a guideline, it should be: make sure your memory is about the one you are marrying. I doubt very much if this bride thought that her groom’s wedding vows were funny:

• The funniest vows I heard were at a college buddy’s wedding. Apparently he thought it would be really romantic to write his vows as a narrative of how he met the bride. Turns out, though, that he must have mixed up how he met her with how he met some previous girlfriend. They ended up getting married but he says she never lets him live that down.

Another general guideline would be to avoid using terminology that may be lost by those that don’t share a particular interest:

• They talked entirely in baseball terms and called each other the managers, the pitchers, the outfielders, and the priest the umpire. It was hilarious.

Sometimes the funny wedding vows should be reserved for small intimate gatherings:

• My mom, at her second marriage, vowed "to honor, but no obey." It should be noted that it was a small ceremony, among the closest of friends.

At other times what one may consider funny wedding vows may be viewed with suspicion by the other, or at least NOT considered something to kid about:

• "I promise not to sleep around on you. Just kidding".

These guidelines for funny wedding vows are just suggestions. You know your guests, your partner and the members of your wedding party, so you can elect to write vows any way you choose…just don’t say we didn’t warn you.
