Easter Bunny History

Time to learn a bit about Easter Bunny history. Easter like most of our holidays begins in early pagan days when many of the celebrations took place at the change of seasons. In the spring the celebration was for new life and the hare and the rabbit were the most fertile animals known so they were a natural for symbols of spring and the beginning of new life.

As Christianity took over Europe, the spring rituals gradually evolved to ones sanctioned by the church. With spring came the Easter celebration and the Resurrection as the sign of renewal and new life.

This blending of the old with the new and the pagan with the Christian gives us the beginning of the Easter celebration and turns the symbol of the hare and rabbit as just creators of new life into a more joyous celebration which is probably the Easter Bunny origin.

In German writings, dating from the 1500s, the Easter Bunny history is revealed. These writings make mention of an Easter Bunny. All the good children of the town were given colored eggs by the Easter Bunny. They built grass nests outdoors to receive these eggs and began the first Easter baskets.

In the early 1800s edible bunnies show up in German writings and it is said they were made from pastry and sugar. The early German settlers came to what is now Pennsylvania Dutch country and brought all of their folk lore with them.

In the 1700s we find the story of the Easter Bunny coming to town and bringing colored eggs. They were "laid" in a nest that the children provided by using their caps and bonnets and hiding them in a secluded spot.

Easter Bunny history is pretty straightforward and has not changed much to this day. Children everywhere still keep looking for that Easter Bunny coming to town and hopping down the Bunny Trail to bring them not only colored eggs but lots of chocolate ones, too.

Set your own Easter Bunny history and order a Bunny birth announcement to introduce your new baby.
