Christmas Gifts to Make

This year many people are looking for Christmas gifts to make as a way of being able to give something yet stay within a limited budget. Making homemade gifts is something I’ve done a lot in my life. Looking back I have to admit that there were a few of those gifts that should have never been made. For the most part, however, the gifts have been big hits with the recipients.

One year, when I was a newly-married young wife living in Kansas, I gave the gift of popcorn. Well, I did more than just give popcorn. I took glass mayo jars with their metal lids and turned them into decorated popcorn canisters. I covered the lids with bread dough and baked them until they were nicely puffed up and browned. I then dehydrated the bread lids until all the moisture was out, and then brushed on a polyurethane sealant.

Next I painted realistic-looking exploded white and yellow popcorn on the glass jar using acrylic craft paint. Just in case that wasn’t enough to identify the contents of the jar, I painted on the words, “Popcorn”. Lastly I filled the jar with locally-grown, fresh from the field popcorn kernels and tied a gingham ribbon around the top of the jar, just under the puffy dough lid. Thankfully that gift was popular with everyone.

Another year, I made a variation on this idea with my Spice Tea in gift jars; these would be great Christmas gifts to make this year.

  • The mix: Take 1 cup of Tang, 1 cup of lemon-flavored instant tea, 1 ½ cups of sugar, ½ tsp cinnamon and ½ tsp powdered cloves. Mix thoroughly then fill pint or ½ pint glass jars with the mixture. To fix: 2 T. of mix to 1 C of hot water for a deliciously spicy mix.

  • The jar: Take a piece of fabric in a Christmas pattern, cut out a 7” circle. Glue three cotton balls to the top of the lid, so the lid is covered (you can also use three round cosmetic pads, which are about the same size as the lid). Next center the fabric circle over the cotton-covered lid, and glue the fabric to the sides of the lid. Last wrap a bit of ribbon around the edge of the lid and tie a pretty bow.

Being an occasional artist, some of the easiest Christmas gifts to make are paintings. A couple of years ago, everyone in the family received a framed painting; leaping dolphins for my sister, a panda & bamboo for my niece, a rooster on wood for my mom, and a fisherman in a boat in the middle of a lake at sunset for my dad.
