Christening Invitation Wording

The choice of christening invitation wording is just as important as the design of the invitation. All those details, such as venue, whether to have a celebration following the event, whether to have a poem read or what christening gown would be ideal, all have value. But none may be as important to setting the mood for the occasion as the actual wording used in the christening or baptism invitation.

A baby’s baptism marks the beginning of the child’s spiritual life and can be the most valuable gift parents can give their child. Therefore the wording used in the invitation should reflect the parents’ feelings about the sacredness and value of this ceremony.

Not only does the christening invitation wording impart necessary information. It conveys the parents’ desire for family and friends to share in this special ceremony as their child is welcomed into the Church and dedicated to God.

Often those people you invite are also those that you believe will have a positive and long-lasting influence on your child. You will especially want to include those who you believe will be there to guide your child on his or her spiritual journey through life.

Baptism invitation wording should reflect the importance of this occasion by being formal in tone. This is accomplished not just with the tone of the words and phrases, but by avoiding the use of abbreviations. The wording can then be personalized by the use of a verse or passage that expresses the significance you place on this event.

Aside from the formalized wording of the invitation, certain specific details should also be included. In addition to the baby’s name, the day, date and time should also be provided. Be sure to include the location of the event, complete with venue name, street address, city and state, if inviting out-of-town guests. It is not necessary to provide the zip code.

Here are just a few baptism invitation wording ideas:

  • “Our daughter is a blessing, as beautiful as can be. Join us as we welcome her to God’s family.”
  • “Your presence is requested as we celebrate our new son’s baptism and dedication to our Lord.”
  • “A child is God’s most blessed gift. You are invited to witness the christening of…”
  • “(Parents’ names) joyfully invite you to share with them the Baptism of their son/daughter…”
  • “Your presence is requested at the Christening/Baptism/Dedication of (child’s name)”

As you can see there are a number of words and phrases that are appropriate for christening invitation wording. Choose words that fully express not only the blessedness of the event but how important the guests are to the completeness of the ceremony.
