Housework Can Wait – Get Some Sleep!

“When I became a first time mother the best advice for new mothersI received was to nap when the baby napped. I used this advice and was able to catch up on sleep. There is always time to do chores around the house but when you are well rested you are able to enjoy your baby more. Plus this helps in keeping the baby blues away more.”

“When you first bring the baby home, sleep when they sleep. Don't use that time to clean and catch up on chores cuz it will catch up with you way too soon.”

"The best advice for new mothersI ever received was to get plenty of sleep. It was difficult to take naps initially because there were chores that needed to get done, but once you build naps into your routine, you will be a better mom. Moms need to rest and a rested mom is a healthy mom."

"The best advice I received was to nap when the baby naps and to leave all the housework to the side. It really helped me after a week of trying to keep up with the housework and not napping when the baby napped I was literally going crazy and so emotionally upset. I decided to sleep and I felt so much better after a couple of cat naps during the day."

"The best advice for new mothersis to sleep when the baby sleeps. A lot of mothers do not want to do this at first because they want to use the time the baby is sleeping to get other things down around the house. However, if you follow this advice you will get more sleep, which will ultimately lead you to be more productive."

Remember You Have Needs Too

"I was told: 'When considering the needs of you child and the best ways to meet them, be aware that you will only be the best mother you can be if your needs were met as well.' I was careful to eat well and to rest when I could. I learned to set limits with others regarding my time and attention. I accepted the fact that doing the best I could was the best I could do. I will treasure that advice forever."

You Don’t Have to Be Perfect

"Don’t kill yourself over trying to be "perfect". The happiest children are raised by parents who love them not ones who are perfect."

"You do not have to be a perfect mother, just a "good enough" mother. Children don't have to like you, and they’re going to instinctively love you."

Be Nice, but Ignore the Advice

"The best advice for new mothersI got from the delivery room nurse was actually 'don't take anyone's advice'. Ironic - but she said 'Go with your gut. It’s your baby. Do what works for your family, your job, your situation, and your mood, whatever - there is no right or wrong!'"

"The best advice I received was from a woman who resided in the nursing home where I worked, she told me that everyone was going to be giving me tips and advice. I was told that I should not feel overwhelmed but to take each piece of advice graciously and to remember it, but that I should not feel that I had to do everything that I was told, that I should learn from my daughter and as long as I followed her cues I would be a pro in no time."

"Listen to your heart & your own instincts. Everyone will have a different opinion on how you should raise your baby. The only right way, is your way."

The best piece of advice I got was to not listen to anyone but myself. My mother warned me that everyone around me would be telling me what’s right and what’s wrong, but when it comes down to it 'you have to do what you want with your child. If breast feeding is difficult for you, that doesn't make you a bad mom. It means it just didn't work.' So it's best to take your own advice and not worry what others may think."

There you have it. The absolute best advice for new mothers can be broken down into four, easy to remember, points: Sleep, sleep, sleep; be nice to yourself; perfect parents are a myth; and lastly, forget the advice and fly by the seat of your pants! Congratulations and enjoy the journey.
