African American Baby Names

Recently African American baby names have set the trend for unusual and unique baby names. The addition of a prefix like “La” or “Da” or “Ja” to “Sean” creates “Lasean” or “Dasean”. The creative use of capitalization, hyphens and apostrophes can further exoticize the name to “LaSean”, “Da-Sean” or “Ja’ron”.

Below is a brief ABC list of popular baby names often given to African American girls. A comprehensive list will show the most popular names tend to begin with “J”, “K”, “L”, “S” and “T”, with a noticeable use of prefixes and hyphens and apostrophes. Also the most popular suffix is the “eesha” sound in all its possible spelling variations: “iesha”, “isha”, “eisha”, “easha” and “yesha”.

Here’s a list of African American baby names for boys, a single example for each letter of the alphabet. Again a comprehensive list will show that names beginning with “D”, “J”, “L” and “T” are the most popular.

There’s a wonderful variety and inventiveness shown in many African American baby names. Sometimes these names set the trend for the rest of the population to follow. And occasionally, a simple misspelling leads to a one-of-a-kind memorable name; for example, for a girl who becomes the most popular television talk show host and one of the wealthiest women in the world. The story being that the Biblical name of “Orpah” found in the book of Ruth became “Oprah” and history was made.
