Teen Parenting Tips

Some of the most insightful and practical teen parenting tips come from the teens themselves. Perhaps that’s one of the advantages of your child reaching the double digits; they are hopefully mature enough to begin to express themselves in a way that a listening parent will hear.

Listen to these teen parenting tips submitted from these wise teens.

  1. Always talk to your teens about the future plans they have.
  2. Try to listen to the music they listen to. This provides common ground and keeps you "hip".
  3. Don't act any differently around your teen than you would another person. What I mean is, don't act tougher, more disciplinary, condescending, etc. Just be genuine. Teenagers respect it. I know this tip is effective because I'm a teenager. My mom has always shown me pretty straightforward respect and just talked to me like I'm another person and not 'HERS' (note possessiveness) or some kind of lackey/underling. It generates a lot of respect, honesty, and a close relationship between us.
  4. Pick your battles carefully. Doing homework on Friday night or on Sunday afternoon really doesn't matter. Don't sweat the small stuff. But when something important comes up (like drugs) stand your ground. You're fighting for your child’s life.

Isn’t it amazing how wise these teens are? Perhaps there’s a bit of value in their teen parenting tips that will help you and your teen.
